Raw Material Analysis: Suitability of TiO₂ Pigments & Functional Fillers
in Application Systems

Fillers and pigments used in water-based formulations exhibit different surface characteristics – especially when functionalized. Depending on the pH value, these materials can carry a positive, negative, or neutral surface charge. To achieve excellent product properties, the surface charges of pigments and fillers must be compatible. In many cases, similar surface charges can be advantageous, as electrostatic repulsion between particles helps prevent agglomeration and promotes homogeneous distribution within the matrix.

After evaluating the basic compatibility of the components as a mixture, we determine the optimal pH range in which a uniform surface charge is present. This approach is an integral part of formulation optimization.

We perform these measurements using electroacoustic techniques – under practical conditions and directly on highly concentrated, TiO₂-pigment-based formulations, as typically used in the industrial production of paints, coatings, and pastes.
